Violence is a major cause of workplace injury and death. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, since 1982, there has been an average of more than 1,000 workplace homicides in the United States per year. Each year, over two million people are attached on the job, another six million are threatened and more than sixteen million are harassed, leading to injury, illness, and/or emotional distress. Violence is the leading cause of death for women in the workplace. Homicide is one of the leading causes of death in the workplace, exceeded only by machine deaths and motor vehicle deaths.
The damage caused by workplace violence is of vital concern to employers everywhere. There is a growing awareness of the enormous cost of workplace violence and a high cost in terms of poor employee morale, lost work time, decreased productivity, psychological problems, loss of employees, damage to the public image of the employer, and repairs to facilities. It is estimated that the total cost of damage caused by workplace violence exceeds $4 billion annually.
